PLEASE NOTE:  At the September 11, 2025 Selectboard meeting Herb Childress resigned. A new board chair will be appointed by the Selectboard at their next regular meeting. At that time the chair will take on the Health Officer duties. Absent an official Health Officer appointment. If you are intersted in becoming the Town Health Officer, reach out to a Selectboard member. 

By law, every town and city in Vermont has a local board of health. The local board of health consists of the town health officer and town select board (or city council). The duties and responsibilities of Vermont boards of health are established by state statute.

Town health officers are responsible for:

  • Investigating possible public health hazards and risks within the town or city
  • Taking action to prevent, remove, or destroy any public health hazards
  • Taking action to lessen significant public health risks
  • Enforcing health laws, rules and permit conditions, and taking the steps necessary to enforce orders

The role of Town Health officer is currently being fulfilled by the chair of the Selectboard. If you are interested in being the Town's Health Officer, please reach out to a Selectboard member.

Town’s Animal Control Ordinance

Dog Licenses:

  • Vermont law requires all dogs and wolf hybrids over 6 months old to be licensed.
  • Owners must present a current rabies certificate to the Town Clerk by April 1 each year.
  • Certificate of spayed or neutered must be presented for reduced license fee.
  • Annual FEES:
    • neutered is $11
    • non-neutered is $15
  • After April 1 a late fee is applied.
  • VSA Title 20 §3621 states “the legislative body of a municipality may at any time issue a warrant to one or more police officers, or constables, or pound keepers, directing them to proceed forthwith to destroy in a humane way or cause to be destroyed in a humane way all dogs or wolf hybrids within the town or city not licensed …”
