Sullivan Educational Woods is a town-owned public forest gifted to the town by the Sullivan family in 2003.
The Sullivan Educational Woods is located on Fitzgerald Road. MaryAnn Sullivan and Peter Sullivan, the children of Fran and Annie Ruth Sullivan gave the town this 14.2-acre forest for the purposes of conservation and education. Frank & Annie Ruth were environmentally aware stewards of this land. The parcel had been in Sullivan ownership since 1969. It is the Sullivan’s wish that the property e used for ecological, forestry, educational, noncommercial recreation, and open space purposes only.
The parcel has a long history of agricultural uses but is now completely forested. The parcel is part of a larger deer wintering area as mapped by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Department. It also contains two small wetlands and hosts a diversity of tree and plant species. While small, this parcel offers potential for man uses including wildlife habitat, non-motorized, non-commercial recreation, and education.
In 2003, the Selectboard assigned the stewardship of the Sullivan Woods to the Middletown Springs Conservation Commission. While the commission holds the primary responsibility for management of this parcel, it must report to and gain Selectboard approval prior to making any changes or improvements.
